The African WIDOW Rising Initiative was founded in 2026 by Mrs. Bunmi Tejuoso in response to a question that had gone unanswered for too long: if thousands of dedicated organizations across Africa are working to support WIDOW, why are those women still among the continent's most consistently failed populations?
The answer is not a lack of will. It is a lack of infrastructure. The NGOs on the frontline of widow support are some of the most committed, community-rooted organizations in Africa. But they operate in silos. They are chronically underfunded. They lack access to quality research and sector data. They have no shared platform for advocacy. And the donors who want to support their work have no trusted, accountable intermediary through whom to do so.
AWRI was built to be that intermediary. We are a private institution — a think tank, a funding conduit, and a coordination body — that exists entirely in service of the frontline. We receive and channel donations. We produce and disseminate research. We connect NGOs to each other and to resources. We advocate at the policy level. And we are building, stone by stone, the physical infrastructure the sector will one day need: the WIDOW Hall, a dedicated respite home, and the AWRI Training School, a centre of excellence for everyone working in this space.
To strengthen Africa's response to widowhood by acting as the continent's foremost think tank, funding conduit, and coordination body for widow-focused NGOs — channeling resources, generating knowledge, and building the institutional infrastructure that enables frontline organizations to serve Africa's WIDOW with excellence and dignity.

Every decision AWRI makes is filtered through one question: does this honour the dignity of Africa's WIDOW?
In research, governance, and partnerships — we set the standard for what sector-leading institutional support looks like.
As AWRI grows in credibility, funding, and institutional strength, we will build the WIDOW Hall — a purpose-designed respite and transitional home for WIDOW across Africa. The WIDOW Hall will be a physical expression of everything AWRI stands for: a safe, dignified, beautifully designed space where WIDOW can rest, heal, and begin rebuilding. It will be managed in partnership with frontline NGOs and Future Vision — AWRI Training School
The AWRI Training School will be a dedicated capacity-building institution offering structured training, certification, and professional development for NGO staff, social workers, counsellors, community leaders, and volunteers working in the widow support sector. It will offer both in-person and digital programmes, and its curriculum will be grounded in AWRI's research and field knowledge. The school is designed to raise the quality and consistency of widow support work across Africa.
Mrs. Bunmi Tejuoso is the Founder and Executive Director of the African WIDOW Rising Initiative. Driven by a conviction that the widow support sector in Africa needs strong institutional infrastructure behind it, she established AWRI in 2026 as the continent's first dedicated think tank and funding conduit for widow-focused NGOs. Her leadership is defined by a commitment to systemic change, institutional excellence, and the belief that resourcing the frontline is the highest form of service.
